How well do you know poker? Do you know your odds of winning with Big Slick over a pair of fives? Maybe Howard Lederer could help you. Not only is he one of the most tactical poker players in the world. His nick name, the Poker Professor, serves him right and has given him the opportunity to release poker games for the cell phone, and, well, books.
Howard grew up in New Hampshire and got well acquainted with card games before he turned into a teenager. He would sit in the living room, playing everything from poker to black jack and learned to compete with his friends and family. Today, we can tell that his parents were good mentors as they succeeded not only with Howard, but with his sister Annie Lederer, better known as Annie Duke. Howard’s mind was set on winning especially after beating his father in card games and up to this date, he strongly believes his father never intentionally let him win.
In College, Howard soon discovered that chess was more and more important to him. He decided to move to New York and pursue his past dreams of becoming a professional chess player, but instead got hooked on a poker game at the chess club. The obsession of the game became more and more apparent as he spent up to 80 hours per week, sitting there, playing nothing but poker. He ended up broke almost every time but learned how to improve his game over time.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeHoward failed to make a profit on the poker game and instead moved to the nowadays legendary Mayfair Club. But instead of playing backgammon and bridge like most of the other club members, Howard started to examine Texas Hold’em No Limit. It was a newly introduced game to the world of card games and the excitement of something brand new quickly spread among a few players, such as WSOP champion Dan Harrington and poker professional Erik Seidel.
Howard’s next attempt to advance in the poker business was to move to the heart of gambling, Las Vegas. After doing so, he quickly realised that poker was becoming more popular for every day that passed. Some time passed and Howard’s bankroll had increased significantly. He was now participating in high stake Limit and No Limit games and made a good profit. But when he wanted to evolve even further, he asked his competitive sister to join him at the tables in Vegas. Some time after that, she moved to his brother’s town and they quickly picked up each others’ skills.
Today, Howard and Annie belong to the World Series of Poker hall of fame. Howard has won cash prizes in over 30 WSOP tournaments and won a total of two bracelets. Annie has also been crowned as the most successful poker player in the history of WSOP. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s been a little rivalry over the titles between the two, as Annie has beaten Howard out of several tournaments at the final tables.
If you’re going to play Howard at the tables, know this: he is stiff and still like Phil Ivey and almost as unpredictable as Gus Hansen. To beat his bluffs, you’d probably need the mind of a better professional, or a polygraph.
The Great Dane. That’s what they call him. Gus Hansen has earned the respect of all poker players in the world with his super intellect and his remarkable abilities in poker. He is one of the last people you want to face in front of the table, but also most definitely one of the most entertaining players to watch.
Gus Hansen was born in Danish capitol Copenhagen in the mid 70s. During his late childhood, Gus experienced games like Backgammon and reached world class play. At about 20 years of age, Gus decided that the Danish backgammon market wasn’t big enough. He spent his money on a trip to the United States of America and ended up in Santa Cruz, California and began playing at the card rooms.
Instead of playing backgammon, he instead picked up on various types of poker. During these years, he discovered that a somewhat erratic method worked quite well for him. He became unpredictable and an incredibly aggressive bluffer.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeThen came a letter from the Danish military service. Gus Hansen was obliged to return and served as a civil servant until completion of his duties. He decided to move back to America shortly after and found himself on the streets of New York playing backgammon and gin. For the second time of his life, Gus felt confident that his gambling skills would make him a professional. One day Gus decided to pick up on poker and Texas Hold’em in particular. Its strong growth during the nineties inspired the young Dane, who suddenly found himself playing cash games in every corner of New York.
In 2002, Gus Hansen debuted with Texas Hold’em for the first time in a major tournament. He entered casino Bellagio, paid the buy-in fee for the World Poker Tour: Five-Diamond World Poker Classic. A total of 147 players participated and Gus Hansen’s investment later became the deal of his life to that date. He won the tournament and scored way over half a million Dollars.
Today, Gus Hansen has a great, world-wide reputation. His play style has earned him tens of thousands of fans who follow his moves wherever he goes. Gus is rather discrete about his fame, but we know that his shiny, bright teeth appeared in 2004 People Magazine’s article, “50 Sexiest People”. Add a few million Dollars to that and you’ve got the American Dream in a bundle.
He might remind you of your old grandfather, or perhaps that rich guy in the televised series of Dallas. Make no mistake though. Doyle Brunson is a legend and one of the most successful poker players of all times. He started out playing poker in the small towns of Texas and went on winning nine world championship titles. And let’s not forget about all the other countless events that he has participated at.
Most people know him by his name while others remember him as a promising basketball player. Doyle Brunson grew up in Longworth, Texas, and was drafted by the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers. A knee injury stopped him from becoming a professional. The tragedy forced him into studies at the Simmons University in Abilene. While bills had to be paid, he began playing poker and picked up his skills by travelling back and forth from one university to another. After his graduation, he got a job, but quit when after it became apparent that his poker skills made him more money.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeHe moved to Texas in the 1960s and found his sweet spot, high stakes cash games. He joined many tournaments and performed very well, but it wasn’t until 1976 when he scored his first major world championship title. The following year, he won the championships with the exact same hand, 10-2. This later became the hand known as “a Doyle Brunson”.
In 1978, Brunson released the poker bible of all times, Super/System, a complete guide to Texas Hold’em and other poker games. It is widely recognized as one of the most important poker books of all time, and a must read for anyone who takes poker seriously. His book has since then had some modifications, and a re-release is available, called Super/System 2.
Despite age in the mid seventies, Doyle Brunson still plays poker at the highest possible level. Not only is he still a respected player (and a winner of numerous events in this century), but also a proud co-owner of Doyles Room, an online poker room on the internet. If you want to with play him, look for the most expensive cash tournaments in the world and you might be the lucky guy to spin his hat off. And good luck, because you’re going to need lots of it.
What were you doing at the age of 21? While most people go to their regular jobs at that age, Daniel Negreanu decided to move to Las Vegas and become a professional poker player. Since then, poker has been the center of his heart. But it hasn’t always been a game of cards for Daniel. At a younger age, he aimed at becoming a professional pool player, but his dreams were crushed and he dropped out of school. To survive, he started playing at illegal poker games around Toronto, Canada.
Daniel proved to be a fearsome player at the tables. Unfortunately, his skills in front of the tables brought little luck until 1998, when he made his first appearance in World Series of Poker. He won a bracelet in Texas Hold’em Pot Limit and became the youngest champion in the history of WSOP, at the age of 23. This entry to the poker scene earned him the nickname “Poker Kid”. The year after that, he won the United States Poker Championship. In 2001, he finished at 11th place at the WSOP Main Event.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeIn 2004 Negreanu repeated his success and added a grain of salt to that. He won yet another World Series of Poker bracelet and finished in the money at five other events. In addition, he won the Borgata Poker Open and the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, both earning him a total of $3,0 million. He was awarded the ESPN Player of the Year as well as the CardPlayer Magazine Player of the Year awards. All the winnings have made him the second most successful poker player in the world.
Besides playing poker, Daniel contributes with literature and has written over 100 columns for CardPlayer Magazine. The Poker Kid has also added his own share of testaments to Doyle Brunson’s Super/System 2. If you happen to enjoy Spider-Man, you might be interested in knowing that Daniel has tutored Tobey Maguire.
Daniel is still playing poker, if not more than ever. Besides all his winnings and the literature, he is constantly appearing on television. If you want a share of Daniel, you might also be interested in his own poker game, Stacked, with fully 3D re-animated poker stars in a true poker environment.
Oh, and if you’re looking to find Daniel at a tournament, look for a guy with sports clothes, as he is a big sports fan.
Is that your real name? Is it really? Come on, you have got to be joking. No, he is not kidding, his name really is Chris Moneymaker and he is one of the most successful money makers in the world of poker.
Chris’ passion for gambling has been a lifetime experience. He began playing bridge with his grandmother and later morphed into a love for blackjack. He did not pursue with making his passion a full time job, and instead went to school. After scoring a Masters degree in accounting at the University of Tennessee, he settled into a suburban life as an accountant.
One day, Chris sat down with his friends to watch Matt Damon in Rounders, and was inspired to become a poker player too. Unfortunately, finding legal card rooms was like looking for a needle in a hay stack. So instead of travelling for hours to play Texas Hold’em, he settled with a computer and a jacked modem.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeAfter trying out a few poker rooms, Chris settled with Poker Stars and began playing at some of the many multi table tournaments. He settled with tournaments ranging from $20 to $40 in buy-in fees and won quite a few tournaments.
Winning a few tournaments every now and then seemed like a big deal to Chris at that time, but a $39 satellite tournament changed everything. Chris Moneymaker faced 17 players and hoped to learn a little more about tournament play. Instead of being tutored, he found himself tutor the other players and scored a seat to a 64 player World Series of Poker satellite, where he won a seat to the main event and a trip to Las Vegas.
After being victorious online, Chris had to face an even bigger challenge: to beat real life players, such as Dan Harrington, Phil Ivey and many others. After a few days of gambling, he found himself at the final table. He now had the chance of turning $39 into $2,500,000. The young accountant proved what was beyond his wildest imagination and became the best poker player in the world.
Today, Chris works as a spokesperson at Poker Stars. This is also where you will find him play, as he still enjoys playing tournaments as much as before becoming a Dollar millionaire.
There are many profiles that we would consider as characteristic poker players and Chris Ferguson is most definitely one of them. You’re looking at a player who has been called Jesus for ages, based on his looks of course. If you’re trying to outsmart this guy, you should know that he is more than just a skilled card player. He has photographic memory and his favorite movie is “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”.
Chris Ferguson grew up in the sunny state of Los Angeles, California and was born on April 11, 1963. People who know Chris are well aware that his success in poker has a reason to it. He grew up in a wealthy environment with parents who have doctorate degrees in mathematics. More interestingly, his father advanced in statistics and game theory at the UCLA. Like many other young boys, he followed his parents’ steps and earned a PhD in computer science. Additionally, he picked up on poker at an early age, even before he turned into a teenager. His aim was, however, not set for a poker profession for quite some time.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeHis interest in poker grew as he played poker with friends on weekends during his high school years. As Chris quickly developed, he started exploring whether his new addiction could lead to play at a higher level. Instead of maximizing his chances of winning, he went straight on and targeted the top level of players to find out how they played and what he could do to improve. He ended up playing a lot of live tournaments with buy-ins of $150 to $300.
After graduation in 1999, he decided to aim for the big bucks and joined World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour. At the world championships, Chris won no less than five bracelets, including the victory at the main event of Texas Hold’em No-Limit in 2000. At the final table, Chris faced T.J. Cloutier and got a “trademark” on his winning cards, A-9. T.J. Cloutier had the edge over Chris with A-Q, but at the river Jesus got his prayers heard and hit a 9. So next time you pick up A-9, you have the hands of Chris Ferguson.
Chris is far away from giving up on poker. In fact, we’re not sure if he ever will, that is until Mother Nature has spoken. The living Jesus statue participated in over 70 events in 2004 and at least 75 in 2005. Besides live play, you can also face him and at Full Tilt Poker, which was co-founded by him and a few other poker celebrities. He plays under alias Ferguson and has been spotted in tournaments, and as far as we know, he doesn’t play ring games online.
When people hear of poker and hats, most come to think of Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim. Both are widely known as legends of poker as well as book writers. If you had to compare the two, Slim may not be quite as successful as Doyle, but nevertheless a very interesting character who has succeeded well in the poker industry.
Thomas Austin “Amarillo Slim” Preston, Jr was born in December 31, 1928 in Johnson, Arkansas. He lived in Mineral Wells, Texas until his parents divorced and then moved in with his father in Amarillo, Texas. He graduated out of high school and joined the military for a couple of years. After doing the service, he met up with Brian Roberts and Doyle Brunson, who became good friends and started to gamble and educate each other.
The “poker trio” commenced with all sorts of gambling and travelled from town to town to make a buck or two. In fact, if there was anything that would give them an edge over their opponents, they’d gamble over and over again.
Full Tilt Poker Bonus CodeSlim did not settle down with gambling. In the 50s, he married Helen, “the greatest gamble in life”, as he called it. 20 years later and a whole lot of poker, he watched Johnny Moss with envious eyes as he became the first and second winner at World Series of Poker. Slim decided to claim the position as the world’s best poker player and did so in 1972. Since then, he has collected a total of four WSOP bracelets, including a win at the 1974 No Limit Texas Hold’em. For his efforts Slim was added to the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992.
Being one of the greatest profiles in history of poker, Amarillo Slim finally decided to settle down with gambling. In August 2003 a grand jury indicted on three charges of indecency with his grand daughter. This may have prompted Amarillo’s gambling in public to an end, seeing as a lot of players met him with disgust after the tragic event.
No matter what people may say about Slim, he has proven himself to be an excellent contributor to the world of poker. His book, Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People, is a definite source to many of some priceless tips on how to become a good gambler and an interesting take on, well, Amarillo Slim in person. Look for him in Texas, but don’t expect to find him in any live tournament. If we have to guess, you’ll probably find him in Doyles Room, along with his friend Doyle Brunson.
